Rumours of Spring

On Saturday while on my shopping trip for fruit trees I was amazed that so many orchards in the valley are so far advanced in blossoming. The pink orchards and clear blue skies gave an impression of Spring.

An orchard of espaliered trees a style that is replacing the old orchards

I had to photograph them and in the orchards I was met with the constant humming of bees, that for me is such a happy sound. With all the news of how our bees are in danger of foulbrood disease, a bacterial disease affecting honey bees, it was reassuring to see them in such large numbers.

The Western Cape has lost 40% of its bee population to foulbrood disease this year according to the Mail and Guardian.

Original orchards a sight that is fast disappearing

The following anonymous quote sums up the importance of bees for us as humans.  “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.”

I hope that we will be spared this disease if all the bee farmers take the necessary precautions. The smell and sound of an orchard in blossom is one of the most amazing experiences.
