Home from Home

Living in three places in South Africa is not easy but when a career advancement opportunity in Pretoria presented itself for Keith, we decided to make it work somehow.  We knew it was going to be tough but also realised that it would be an opportunity to expand our interests and experiences.

As a result we live in Bonnievale, Cape Town and Pretoria. With historical homes in Cape Town and Bonnievale, we decided that Pretoria will have to be modern and preferably a ‘lock-up and go’ arrangement. We had the good fortune of finding a flat opposite the Skuilkrans Kopje Nature reserve while around the corner from the best Butchery and Bakery.

Alma Butchery is an institution in Pretoria, serving quality meat products that is prepared and cured on the premises. The deli side also offers cheeses and an extensive range of fine brawns, liver pâtés and terrines.

‘Die Brötstube’ is a must if you are serious about bread. Their fresh home-baked breads have become an institution in the city and foodies drive from across town for the rich selection.  Luckily I do not have to drive as it’s right in our back garden!

Bread at Die Brötstube
On Saturday we could enjoy a meat and cheese platter with homemade bread from ‘Die Brötstube’ and Cap Classique Jacques Bruere Brut Reserve 2008 from Bonnievale. With wine from the Breede River valley and food from the Highveld we could not ask for more looking out over the Nature Reserve and listening to the symphony of birds in the trees.

With our roots in Bonnievale and a traditional lifestyle, we allow ourselves to roam widely and to embrace new experiences that inform and enrich our understanding of our world.
