The Memory of a House

When we bought this property it was not just a house it was a home rich with the history of the people that lived here and we respected the memory and history of the house and its previous inhabitants in the restoration.

We discovered old photo negatives buried in the dust of the brandsolder ,had them restored and used the information regarding the buildings in our restoration research and approach.

Some of the photographs developed from the restored negatives
A sample of the butter paper of  the butter that Nick Olivier’s wife  “Mrs N Olivier” used for packaging her home-made butter was framed and hangs in the cottage that used to be the dairy.

A Sample of the butter paper used by Mrs N Olivier and a photograph of her
Nick Olivier’s hand held sizing rings for grading fruit that he used for grading fruit on the property will be incorporated in the décor of the outbuildings. This is such a valuable reference to the history of the property and fruit growing industry of the valley.

Tant Anna’s confirmation of the correctness of the detail of the restoration was heart warming. The restoration of detail in the house would trigger memories of when she was young and she would elaborate about things in the house that informed us about elements of the restoration.

By respecting the memory of the inhabitants of the house and the history of the industries associated with it we could restore the property to its most authentic state.

  1. A home with memory gives it a dimension beyond the present, a sense of the continuity of life. Thanks for this post.
